Frequently asked questions.

What should I expect when I come to class?

“Play, but play seriously.” Classes are a place to learn, hone your craft, build yourself up, and eventually experiment. The class is divided into a very active & physical portion (learning strikes, kicks, combinations, etc) and more of a mental portion (energy drills, sensitivity training). This is how Bruce’s classes were run.

What are the class rules?

1. Be on time.

2. Leave your ego at the door.

3. Don’t teach anything you’ve learned outside of class (unless you’ve reached Level 1 Instructorship).

What SHOULD I WEAR TO CLASS?

There is no uniform in Jeet Kune Do. You can wear whatever you want, so long as you feel comfortable moving (and sweating). Weather-appropriate active wear is encouraged as are close-toed shoes. We will practice outdoors and may be on either grass or concrete, depending on the size of the class.

What equipment do i need to bring to a class?

You can show up with no equipment and do just fine! A towel and a water bottle would be a good idea. Eventually, you may want to invest in your own focus mitts for hygiene. We will practice without gloves, but if your hands are sensitive you may also want to bring a pair of grappling (MMA) gloves, hand wraps, or both.

WILL WE BE SPARRING?

Yes, but not until you are at an advanced level. Sparring is an important part of the learning process. There is no better way to test the skills you’ve learned than against a live, unwilling target. That said, safety is our priority in sparring and proper gear and integrity is a necessity. If you would rather not spar, that is absolutely fine.

WHAT IS YOUR PRICING?

Please visit our Lessons page to learn more about the pricing we offer.

What age groups do you teach?

Jeet Kune Do is for everyone! As long as you’re old enough to take it seriously and young enough to move your body, you can be taught in a private lesson environment. Please ask Sifu Gray if your child would be a good fit for group lessons before signing up for participation.

CAN I STILL LEARN JEET KUNE DO WITH A INJURY OR DISABILITY?

For the most part, yes. Jeet Kune Do is about capitalizing on your strengths. If something is painful for you, the best thing to do is not do that thing. If you do decide to come to class with an injury, please make sure the activities in the class will not make the injury worse.

How long will it take for me to earn my black belT?

There is a very American-centric line of thought that associates a “black belt” as an accomplishment of completion. Martial arts is a journey, not a destination. Jeet Kune Do does not have a belt system at all. Ranks are only assigned to those students who take an interest in committing to the art, learning as much as possible about it, and sharing that knowledge with others. The typical timeline to earn full instructorship is about a 5 year minimum.
